I am a worker who labors with songs, doing in my own way, what I know best, like any other Cuban worker. I am faithful to my reality, to my revolution and the way in which I have been brought up.
Is this central to the winning formula of iconic creations? The mechanism of a classic is a question Kurkdjian has asked himself, telling me he put it to his friend who works as a contemporary art advisor. "I love her answer," he shares. "When she looks at a piece of art, she's checking two things. The first thing she's checking is, is there somewhere, even hidden, a kind of a classical anchorage or point? And then she checks if there is something very contemporary, almost avant garde-ish. And of course, you have to evoke an emotion. The combination of classicism and avant garde mixed with something that brings a new emotion, is the mark of possible timelessness."
